Need Feeder for Squirrels and Raccoons -- Posted by Jane Walbridge on 11-09-03 08:20
I know that most of you expend great energy and more than a few dollars
keeping these guys away from your feeders. We don't. We love the
squirrels as much as the birds and have a handicapped raccoon and his
mate (or buddy) that we feed all winter. We have found that having the
squirrel feeder in the tree away from the thin poles hold the bird
feeders keeps the critters out of the bird food. I also provide suet
cakes for the squirrels and dog kibble for the raccoons. We have a
peaceable kingdom that has provided us with hours of entertainment and
peace of mind knowing that no one when to bed hungry on a cold winter night.
Our problem is that we need a bigger better feeder than the box that
sits on the small heavy screen platform. The raccoons have a tendency
to throw a lot of sunflower seed on the ground, which the skunk and
groundhog appreciate when they are awake, but it goes to waste if they
are napping. We need something that holds more than half gallon and
dispenses it more slowly.
I've been doing a lot of searches and everything seems designed to keep
out the exact animals we want to feed. I don't expect to find something
better, but it would be nice if I did.
Thanks a lot.
Jane
Ps. No, I don't want your raccoons and squirrels unless you pay the
postage. :)

Hi Jane,
We also provide for all the creatures that visit our place. Yes, the
bird feeders are squirrel-proof, but we have a very large "platform
feeder" - our back deck. We throw sunflower, cracked corn and cheap
birdseed on the deck, and also under the birdfeeders. Keeps the
squirrels, chipmonks, raccoons, groundhogs, rabbits, deer and ducks well
fed. Sorry I don't have any suggestions for a critter feeder.

Sitting by our persimmon tree last fall I watched a robin stretch out to peck off a piece of the bright, ripe fruit. Suddenly, the bird lost its footing, yet undaunted it clung like a pitbull to the persimmon. Swinging to and fro below, the robin's resolve paid off when a bit of the fruit tore lo... (Read More)
