Hummzinger hummingbird feeder -- Posted by SpringPam on 05-02-04 10:54
Ok gang,
I don't have any financial or personal interest in the company, but I am
totally amazed again this year how easy this feeder is to maintain, clean,
and refill. I think I have tried nearly every commercial hummingbird feeder
made and this is it! only two parts - no hidden corners or crevices, (well
there is that little bit underneath that sometimes has a small spider nest
and a toothpick can take care of that) no bottle brush needed. accumulates
very little black mold and that is in the Texas warmth and heat.
This year, I found an easy way to make up nectar. (no boiling since I don't
store -learned that here)
I have the 8 oz. HZ, but found that 2/3 cup of water with 2 TBSP sugar fills
it adequately without being so close to top of saucer that it drips on the
way out the back door. (found this ratio is 4 water:1 sugar by measuring
out the TBSP into the 1/3 cup)
I change it every 3 days - remembering to do the 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, etc.
I had a ruby throat hit the feeder within 15 minutes of hanging it for the
first time and had not seen any in the area prior to hanging it.
Cheers, SpringPam

Picture these night birds
PSA Journal - September 1, 2003, by Don Chisholm
My first shot of a yellow-crowned night heron was taken at the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The bird was "hot-footing it" across shallow water in pursuit of a crab. I wondered why a night heron was working at nine in the morning here in Sanibel, Florida. I had seen them roosting ... (Read More)

Sunset - September 1, 2003, by Bonnie Henderson
Every year, volunteers with HawkWatch International spend months counting--and in some cases capturing and banding--hawks, eagles, and other birds of prey across the West. At Bonney Butte, on Mt. Hood's southeast shoulder in Oregon, the annual count peaks in September, and each day as many as 40 ... (Read More)

Many birds use ants to fumigate their feathers. When attacked, ants release formic acid to protect themselves. The birds annoy the ants to get a dose of the formic acid and then use the acid to kill mites that have infested their feathers.
