feather clusters?? -- Posted by MELLOY on 09-29-04 05:41

We love and adore our male Peachface parrot aka:Biki of approx 3 yrs,
he is very tame and lives on us and eats what we eat plus his
essential pellets and bird vitamins etc. He has a feather picking
problem and once had an infected preening gland which had to be
operated on and afterwards we think he may have plucked out the
duct(if that makes sense). Anyway since then, approx 8 mnths he has
had a permanent scab over the gland and keeps picking at this too. The
scab has quickly healed completely on 2 separate occasions with the
help of an Elizabethian collar. What I am trying to find out is if it
is normal for some feathers to grow in clusters from one pore ie 3-6
individual feathers from the one follicle site similar to 3 hair
follicles sprouting from one pore in humans? These clusters are
located primarily around his tail area. Is the picking problem,
feather clusters and gland injury inter-related? Biki is otherwise
well, active and has never had contact with other birds. Thankyou to
anyone who has information to help us and Biki.
