Dove? -- Posted by ToniB on 09-21-04 18:16

My husband came home this evening with what appears to be a dove. It's all
white, quite large actually, and it's been injured. He found it in the street
and it has what appears to be scrape injuries on the chest, head and the tail
feathers are missing or askew. It seems to be ok otherwise. I put it in a
large cat carrier with newspaper on the floor with wild bird seed and water.
It seems to be resting quietly, not seeming to be stressed. The wings look
intact. The animal hospital that will take this bird isn't open until tomorrow
morning. Is there anything else I should do until then? It's funny because I
haven't had much to do with birds lately and a couple of weeks ago I helped
rescue a goose with a broken wing. That's how I know about this particular
animal hospital. They specialize in birds and take them right in. This bird
we have now is really large, almost the size of a chicken. What else could it
be besides a dove? I'm in the Northeast if that matters.

Thanks for any advice

what you are doing is fine, if its large its probably a pigeon does it have a
band on eiother leg down near its feet??

Re: Dove? -- Posted by ToniB on 09-21-04 19:19

It doesn't have a band. I looked when it first got here. I used to keep
pigeons when I was a kid and this bird is a LOT larger than a pigeon. It looks
like a dove, but it's so huge. It was pecking at the food but I didn't look
close enough to see if it could really eat. I worry about dehydration so I
hope it goes for the water. It seems to be resting comfortably. I put it in a
quiet room for now. I just hope it survives the night so I can get it to the
vet tomorrow AM. Thanks for the response.

There are some very large pigeon breeds, but it may be a different kind of
bird.
Silly question maybe, but does it have webbed feet? Some seabirds resemble
doves.

A large bird can survive overnight without feeding. Just get it help as
soon as you can.
Good luck

No webbed feet. Some of the people who work with my husband thought it was a
sea gull type bird. Maybe it's just a BIG dove.
